MSN Explorer: Optimize Windows Internet Explorer settings for a dial-up connection

If you use a dial-up Internet connection, sometimes you may need to change your Windows Internet Explorer settings to improve the performance of MSN.

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

    - Or -

    Click Start, and then click in the Start Search box.

  2. Type inetcpl.cpl, and then press ENTER.

  3. On the General tab:

    1. Follow the steps for your browser:

      • In Internet Explorer 6:

        1. Click Delete Cookies, and then click OK.

        2. Click Clear History, and then click OK.

        3. Click Delete Files, select the Delete all offline content check box, and then click OK.

      • In Internet Explorer 7:

        1. In the Browsing history section, click Delete.

        2. Click Delete all.

        3. Select the Also delete files and settings stored by add-ons check box, click Yes, and then click Close.

      • In Internet Explorer 8:

        1. In the Browsing history section, click Delete.

        2. Select all of the check boxes, and then click Delete.

    2. Click Settings, and then adjust the Amount of disk space to use setting to 100 megabytes (MB).

    3. Click View Files, press CTRL+A to select all the files, and then press DELETE. To confirm the deletion, click Yes.

    4. Close the Temporary Internet Files window, and then click OK.

  4. On the Security tab:

    1. Click Internet, select Default Level if it's available, and then click Apply. Repeat this step for the Restricted sites, Trusted sites, and Local intranet zones.

    2. Click the Restricted icon, and then click Sites.

    3. Remove each listed site by selecting it and then clicking Remove.

    4. Click OK.

  5. On the Privacy tab:

    1. Click Sites. If Sites is unavailable, click Edit.

    2. If sites appear under Managed Web sites, click Remove All, and then click OK.

    3. Click Default if it is available, and then click Apply.

  6. On the Content tab:

    1. Click Clear SSL State, and then click OK.

    2. Follow the steps for your browser:

      • If you use Internet Explorer 6:

        1. In the Personal information area, click AutoComplete.

        2. In the AutoComplete Settings dialog box, click Clear Forms, and then click OK.

        3. Click Clear Passwords, and then click OK.

      • If you use Internet Explorer 7 or 8, go on to the next step.

  7. On the Connections tab:

    1. Under Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings, select an item, and then click Settings.

    2. Clear all the check boxes, and then click OK</ui_item>.

    3. Repeat these steps for each item under Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings.

    4. Click LAN Settings, clear all the check boxes, and then click OK.

  8. On the Advanced tab, click Restore Defaults, and then click Apply.

  9. Click OK.
